Alaska the beautiful and majestic - even when you see the pictures, you cannot believe that those mountain ranges, glaciers, etc. are real. And you want to pack you bags immediately and head off to your own adventure.
But wait! You cannot just pack up and go to Alaska anytime you want to go. Cruising Alaska has a very short season and you have to plan ahead for it. Alaska Cruise season is rather short and is only five (5) months! It runs from May to September of each year. With the months of June, July and August being the busiest times of travel.
When should you go?
If you are traveling with school age children then, you will want to travel in July and August. It is peak season in Alaska and you are able to see more of the wild life. Additionally, it is warmest part of year in the state, so you can take advantage of that for your shore excursions. However, the rainy season will start in July.
If you are traveling without kids or they are not subject to the school year calendar, then the months of May or September would be good times to travel. Generally, the ships are less crowded.
Fun Fact:
Shoulder Season is considered the period of time that is the least busy travel in the region.
For Alaska the months of May and September are considered Shoulder Season.

Weather in Alaska is unpredictable and can rain at any time. Be sure to dress in layers and be prepared for rain or sun.
